In support of the growing number of family, friends, neighbors and guests who are affected by Breast Cancer, Team Alfie’s has decided to participate in Athena’s Cup this year. The goal of the National Chapter of Athena’s cup is to collect 169,000 bras, along with a $5.00 donation. They will then hook them together for the Guinness Book of records to bring awareness to the Battle against Breast Cancer. Please support us by donating your gently used bra or bras along with a $5.00 donation made payable to Athena’s Cup and we will start our own chain here at Alfie’s until they are collected in October for Breast Cancer Awareness Month! Feel free to decorate the bra any way you choose or place the name of a loved one who has been affected by breast cancer on your bra and let’s see how many unique bras we can collect. An Evening for Ayden!

In May 2010, four-year-old Ayden Jolicoeur was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of cancer called “Anaplastic Astrocytoma” (Stage 4). Doctors recommended that Ayden receive a costly form of treatment known as proton therapy as well as chemotherapy.

Ayden’s family needs your help. The aggregate cost of Ayden’s medical treatment and travel expenses is expected to be exorbitant. Your donations can help ease the pain of a family who has already suffered a significant amount of emotional distress.

This is a local family, here in Palm Coast. Ayden’s older brother, Paul, goes to school with our daughter Ashley.

After our wine tour at Monsanto, we continued driving through the winding hills of Tuscany into Pisa where we toured the Leaning Tour, the Duomo and the churches and dined at a roadside cafe.

On Friday, we were scheduled for a private tour and tasting at the Monsanto Winery in Tuscany. Our hostess, Veronica, led us on a two hour journey through the beautiful estate of the Bianchi family and their extensive wine cellars. We were lucky enough to be there during harvest time and learned how the grapes are harvested, pressed, aged, bottled and labeled. We also learned that the skins and seeds of the grapes are later used for balsamic vinegars and an Italian after dinner liquer called "Grappa"

Tuscany

Thursday we bid goodbye to the beautiful Amalfi coast and headed through the rolling hills of Tuscany. Miles and miles of olive groves and grape vineyards with a scattering of ancient walled cities in between. The scenery was beyond compare!

Capri

On Wednesday, we took a jet boat from Positano to the beautiful island of Capri. Here we toured the island and it's secret grottos, rode the funicular to the top and took in the awesome views. We were treated to GIGANTIC lemons that they use to make their famous lemoncello drink and lunch at a seaside cafe! Beautiful!

Greg and Alfie made the hour long winding drive up to Mt. Vesuvius, the volcano that erupted and wiped out several cities. Here Alfie is sitting on the lip of the still active volcano!

Today we got up at 5 a.m. to catch the early train to Naples. Once we got there we took a death defying taxi ride to the airport to pick up our rental car. After a few mishaps with our rented GPS system we found our way to this beautiful paradise by the sea. We have walked down the entire mountain and back up again and now we are very tired. We are going to call it an early nite. Ciao'

The Spanish Steps

By this time, it was pouring rain and we were riding on a hop on, hop off tour bus. We made it to the Spanish Steps and climbed to the top but we were wet and cold and the view was a bit cloudy. But we were there!!!

The Forum

Next, we walked through the remains of the Forum, or "market" and Palantine Hill. This whole area houses the remains of the old prison, markets, churches, arches, statues and the Senate Building presided over by Julius Caesar!

The Colliseum

We began our day on Sunday by walking from our hotel down to the Colliseum, where gladiators and slaves fought for their lives against exotic animals and criminals. AMAZING! Could seat hundred of thousands of people and the higher social class you were, the better seats you got.

St. Peter's Square

This is a view from standing at the entrance to St. Peter's Basilica. Our tour guide told us that the square will hold another 400,000 faithful at any Papal appearance. This is the sight that brought tears to my eyes! Wow, what a day!

This church speaks for itself. I will never again be able to visit any cathedral and say wow, this is really something. Not after seeing this one! The most dramatic, ornate, place I have ever laid eyes on. Holds 60,000 faithful followers!

The Vatican

After a good night's sleep we got up early on Saturday and took the local bus to Vatican City! Wow! What an awe inspiring place, it actually brought tears to my eyes. We had a pre-arranged tour of the museums, which ended here at St. Peter's Square where we continued into St. Peter's Basilica and onto the Tombs of the Popes.

Piazza Navona

Next we walked along the intimate little side streets of Rome, shopping in the gift shops, watching the folks enjoying dinner at the sidewalk cafe's and finally wandered into Piazza Navona. A huge cathedral and statue grace this popular square as do hundreds of painters working on new projects and selling their wares!

The Trevi Fountain

First thing we did was walk over to the famous Trevi Fountain. Our hotel is centrally located in downtown Rome so we are in withing walking distance of everything. Even though we are exhausted today, we were very excited and went out sightseeing as soon as we dropped our luggage! This fountain was amazing!

Our flight left Orlando right on schedule Thursday, September 17 at 5:05 p.m. We arrived in Cincinnati at 7:10 and boarded our flight for Paris at 7:50. We "crossed the pond" silently while we slept and we enjoyed watching Star Trek while we traveled. The multilingual staff was super efficient and friendly - just like Alfie's! Felt like being at home! We arrived in Paris at 10:00 a.m. Friday and flew on to Rome. We finally reached Rome at 1:20 p.m. today!
